The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
