The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
