British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
