A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
